A welcome addition to our new Wines by the Glass this summer is from famed Rhone Valley producer Michel Chapoutier. This wine is from his holdings in the Victorian Pyrenees of Australia, an area of “a remarkable diversity of microclimates and soils.” Using biodynamic principles in his vineyards, in what is considered a cooler climate of Australia, he produces this Shiraz which we are pleased to share with you. The winery is named Tournon after a famous commune in the Hermitage AOC of the Northern Rhone.
Using his knowledge of the Syrah/Shiraz his family has made in France for seven generations, Chapoutier is working in Australia to create uniquely Australian wines, with a storied knowledge of the French history of the grape. This is a ripe, fruit forward and modern Shiraz with good acidity and smooth tannins. The flavor profile is classic Shiraz with dark red fruits and notes of white pepper. A well-balanced wine with modest ABV, this is one that would pair well with charcuterie and smoked and grilled meats.
