What Is “Terroir”?
A term used in the world of wine, “terroir” (tair-wahr) is a French concept that refers to the combination of factors including soil, climate, and aspect (terrain) that gives wine grapes their distinctive character. It emphasizes the fact that wine grapes tend to have a specific place character, which is why, for example, the flavor of a bottle of cabernet sauvignon made from cabernet grapes grown in a specific vineyard in Napa Valley, California may differ significantly from a bottle of cabernet sauvignon made from cabernet grapes grown in a vineyard in France or Chile or Australia or Oregon or the Russian River Valley or even on another part of the same Napa Valley vineyard. At FLG Terroir, we’ve used this same concept to make sure that we are firmly rooted in the specific place character of Flagstaff, with all the delightful and unique elements that make our mountain town such a special place.
